In case you are new around these parts and don't know what "Old School Friday" is, well it is grown folks MUSIC! Yes we post some music that comes from some time before 1999, (hopefully) to relive some memories, and to educate or just entertain each other.
Ms Grapevine and MarvalusOne have teamed up to create a meme titled Old School Friday and since I love my music I had to sign up to join! To join in the Old School Friday Fun go Here for guidelines.

When you think of the word "FREEDOM" a lot of different things come to mind...
Blacks - FREEDOM from slavery (past and present);
Asians - FREEDOM from sweat shops;
Prisoners - FREEDOM from jail;
Africa - FREEDOM from Apartheid;
Darfur - FREEDOM from genocide;
Asia - FREEDOM from child pornography, and the list goes on.
People are constantly complaining about EVERYTHING in America. Not enough this or too much of that, but let me just say that I would rather be here in America, than to be in any other country right now! I am not in favor of war but I do honor and respect those who choose to serve our country because they are doing their duty to protect OUR country! This is THE LAND OF THE FREE AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE!!!
So in honor of "Freedom Friday" please enjoy this video...

Thank You

Happy Fourth Of July!!! Happy Freedom Friday!!!

Old School Friday #15 "Philly Soul"

You Know What It Is!!!!
It is...FRIDAY!! Which is my favorite day of the week because I get to post my "Old School Friday" Picks! In case you are new around these parts and don't know what "Old School Friday" is, well it is grown folks MUSIC! Yes we post some music that comes from some time before 2000, (hopefully) to relive some memories, and to educate or just entertain each other.
Ms Grapevine and MarvalusOne have teamed up to create a meme titled Old School Friday and since I love my music I had to sign up to join! If you want to join in the Old School Fun then go HERE for the guidelines.

The theme for this week ,

"Philly Soul"

Humm, This Philly Soul theme is going to be HOT today!! I have to be true to "Old School" with this one, so I have to post singers from when I was growing up! The 70's was an awesome era for music! I bet the other participants will have a hard time posting 1 or 2 picks with this theme, I could have posted at least 20!!

Here are the other "Old School Friday" participants:

- Electronic Village - Fresh And Fab -

- Ms Grapevine -Quick -Marcus LANGFORD

- Cassandra - Danielle - iriegal -Hagar's Daughter - Lisa C

-Chocl8t - DP - Dallassouth - Kreative Talk

-Marvalus One - Regina - Vivrant Thing

-AJ - Sharon - The Creole Pimp - Invisible Woman

-Beleiver 1964 - - SJP - sHaE-sHaE

*WARNING... I GOT A LITTLE CARRIED AWAY, SORRY!*

So my FIRST pick for today's theme is Norman Connors. Norman Connors was born March 1st 1947, in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. If this man doesn't ooze Philly Soul than I don't know who does!! I personally LOVE this song. This is Old School BABY MAKING music!! (y'all don't know nothing about this...)

Norman Connors - You Are My Starship

So now that I got the SEXY out of the way... My real focus for today's theme is Gambel & Huff and TSOP (The Sound Of Philadelphia)! Gambel & Huff got together and made magic in the 70's and with songs from HIT MAKERS like Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, The O'Jays, Lou Rawls, Billy Paul and many more! The now defunct Philadelphia International Record Label, which was started 1971 is credited with multiple hits.

The Sound Of Philadelphia (TSOP)

Now that you have your intro, my artists picks are...
The LEGENDARY O'Jays! How can you talk about Philly soul and not talk about the O'Jays? They lent songs to the soundtrack of my life like "Stairway To Heaven"; "Forever Mine"; "Family Reunion" and "Cry Together".
O'Jays - Stairway To Heaven

Jean Carne was born in Columbus Georgia but did a lot of state and label hopping. In her travels she spent some time at Philadelphia International and while there she released this mild hit...
Jean Carne - Don't Let It Go To Your Head Now

This next group reps Houston Texas, BUT they were also signed to the Philadelphia International Record Label.
Archie Bell & The Drells - Tighten Up

Last but not least, what would Philly Soul be with out this next group? This is how you tell someone that you miss them! There is NOTHING out there today that even comes close to the emotion and intensity of this song...
Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes - I Miss You

Whew, now THAT was fun! I think I wore Youtube out this week!
Happy OSF! Peace & Love!!

So there is no one that I actually want to be like but there is a singer that I admire. I picked famous South African Singer Miriam Makeba. I admire her dedication to the South African people, and her ability to use her voice to speak out against the struggle of the victims of Apartheid.
Zenis Miriam Makeba was born on March 4th 1932 in Johannasburg South Africa. Ms. Makeba lived in exile from her home land for 30 years for speaking out against Apartheid and for appearing in an Anti -Apartheid video in 1960, not returning until Nelson Mandela was released from jail. She was married to South African musician Hugh Masekela and was also married to Black Panther leader Stokely Carmichael. Read more about this Ambassador of Humanity HERE.
