Darfur: Nationwide Day Of Action

Good Morning Friends!

I usually only do one post on Friday and that is my Old School Friday (I LOVE my music!!!), but earlier in the week I visited one of my favorite blogs "Electronic Village" and found out that there would be a collective blogging effort on Friday June 20th for Darfur.
You may remember that I participated in another Darfur blogging effort Here and a Humanitarian effort Here. So blogging for a cause is not new to this blog. I ask that you take some time to view the Darfur information at the following links and decide if this is a cause that you wouldn't mind getting involved in.

To mark United Nations World Refugee Day on June 20, students, activists, and community leaders in cities across the country are gathering at the stores and headquarters of sponsors that have failed to address the Darfur genocide - despite their responsibility as stakeholders of the Olympics. Click here to attend an event in your community.

I do know and understand that some of you think...We have enough of our own problems right here in the good old USA! And this is true, we certainly have tons of problems and issues here. But the difference is that we also have politicians, activist, lawmakers, and others whose job it is to ensure that we continue to have certain freedoms (at least they are supposed to...). There is a faction of people that NO ONE is working for, No One is trying to help ensure THEIR FREEDOMS! So if not us than WHO will speak out?? If not now than WHEN will we speak out??
Get MOTIVATED!
Get EDUCATED!
Get INVOLVED!

Let YOUR voice be heard... someones life may depend on it...

Bloggers Unite For Human Rights!

Today May 15, 2008 some bloggers are involved in a collective effort to bring the issue of HUMAN RIGHTS to the forefront of our minds and hearts. If you for whatever reason do not know, want or agree with the issue of HUMAN RIGHTS let me ask you two questions…

Are YOU human? Do you want, need, or have rights? If you answered YES to either of these questions (If you answered NO than email me and I will definitely pray for you!!) than the issue of HUMAN RIGHTS is YOUR issue too!!

What are HUMAN RIGHTS?

HUMAN RIGHTS as defined by dictionary.com is: fundamental rights, esp. those believed to belong to an individual and in whose exercise a government may not interfere, as the rights to speak, associate, work, etc.

HUMAN RIGHTS as defined by the American Heritage Dictionary:

The basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled, often held to include the right to life and liberty, freedom of thought and expression, and equality before the law.

So now that you know what Human Rights are let me ask you these two questions… Have your Human Rights EVER been violated, taken away or abused?

Have you ever in your lifetime seen or heard of the Human Rights of other people being violated, abused or taken away?

If you answered YES to either of these questions than I urge you take a moment and think about what you can do to help yourself or others who have had their basic Human rights violated. Please don’t think that it is not your issue or that there is nothing that you can do, because there is. You can start by educating yourself about the issues! People worldwide are having their rights violated. People in Asia (think –Sri Lanka & Burma); People in Africa (think – Darfur & Zimbabwe); People in the good old United States (think - Guantanamo & African Americans). That’s right; RACISIM is definitely a violation of HUMAN RIGHTS! So to find out more about Human Rights please visit the three sites listed below to find out what YOU can do to help yourself or others who may have Human Rights issues. Educate and Activate yourself! Help yourself & help others…Please.

Amnesty International (http://www.amnesty.org/)

Human Right Watch (http://www.hrw.org/)

Youth For Human Rights (http://www.youthforhumanrights.org)

You can also visit the site Bloggers Unite Group (http://www.blogcatalog.com/group/bloggers-unite)

To read what other bloggers posted about HUMAN RIGHTS … or the lack there of.

Ok, so now you have had your class titled Introduction To Human Rights, also known as HUMAN RIGHTS 101. This is only the beginning of your HUMAN RIGHTS education; the rest is up to you! The power words for today are EDUCATE & ACTIVATE! What will YOU do next?

Blogger's Unite For Human Rights!

I did a post on April 13th about the genocide in Darfur and the plight of the people there. I was one of many bloggers to participate in the Global Day For Darfur by lending our voices and our blogs to bring the social issues that plague Darfur to the forefront of our consciousness.

It’s time to use our collective voices to do something for people other than ourselves!

On April 30th, I got a message from Blogcatalog which said that on May 15th Bloggers Unite will be joined by Amnesty International in an effort to engage in a worldwide movement that campaigns for internationally recognized human rights, On this day you’re invited to help bring attention to these atrocities by posting your views and feelings on them.

We really can make a difference!

So please

  1. Visit the Bloggers Unite page,
  2. Grab a badge for your blog, and
  3. Write a post drawing attention to this movement, and
  4. Remember to post on May 15th about Human Rights!
So do some research, get the facts, and join the Bloggers Unite For Human Rights campaign on May 15th. Let YOUR voice be heard!

Old School Friday #11 - Singers We Want To Be Like

You Know What It Is!!!!
It is...FRIDAY!! Which is my favorite day of the week because I get to post my "Old School Friday" Picks! In case you are new around these parts and don't know what "Old School Friday" is, well it is grown folks MUSIC! Yes we post some music that comes from some time before 2000, hopefully to relive some memories, and to educate or just entertain each other.
Ms Grapevine and MarvalusOne have teamed up to create a meme titled Old School Friday and since I love my music I had to sign up to join! If you want to join in the Old School Fun then go HERE for the guidelines.

The theme for this week ,

"Singers We Want To Be Like"

The theme for this week caused a little bit of discussion throughout the week, so we were asked to please explain why we chose our artists, ie their skill, talent, fame, etc. It will be very interesting to see what the other participants post. So join in and post your favorite old school song or just visit the other participants and enjoy the music!!
Here are the other "Old School Friday" participants:

- Electronic Village - Chatting Over Cocktails -

- Ms Grapevine -Quick -Marcus LANGFORD

- Cassandra - Danielle - iriegal -Hagar's Daughter - Lisa C

-Chocl8t - DP - Kreative Talk

-MarvalusOne - Regina - Vivrant Thing

-AJ - Sharon - Invisible Woman

-Beleiver 1964 - - SJP - sHaE-sHaE

So there is no one that I actually want to be like but there is a singer that I admire. I picked famous South African Singer Miriam Makeba. I admire her dedication to the South African people, and her ability to use her voice to speak out against the struggle of the victims of Apartheid.
Zenis Miriam Makeba was born on March 4th 1932 in Johannasburg South Africa. Ms. Makeba lived in exile from her home land for 30 years for speaking out against Apartheid and for appearing in an Anti -Apartheid video in 1960, not returning until Nelson Mandela was released from jail. She was married to South African musician Hugh Masekela and was also married to Black Panther leader Stokely Carmichael. Read more about this Ambassador of Humanity HERE.

You are wild, crazy, and a huge rebel. You're always up to something. You have a ton of energy, and most people can't handle you. You're very intense. You definitely are a handful, and you're likely to get in trouble. But your kind of trouble is a lot of fun. You are friendly, charming, and warm. You get along with almost everyone. You work hard not to rock the boat. Your easy going attitude brings people together. At times, you can be a little flaky and irresponsible. But for the important things, you pull it together. You understand the world better than most people. You also have a very active imagination. You often get carried away with your thoughts. You are prone to a little paranoia and jealousy. You sometimes go overboard in interpreting signals. You are usually the best at everything ... you strive for perfection. You are confident, authoritative, and aggressive. You have the classic "Type A" personality.
