When you think of the word "FREEDOM" a lot of different things come to mind...
Blacks - FREEDOM from slavery (past and present);
Asians - FREEDOM from sweat shops;
Prisoners - FREEDOM from jail;
Africa - FREEDOM from Apartheid;
Darfur - FREEDOM from genocide;
Asia - FREEDOM from child pornography, and the list goes on.
People are constantly complaining about EVERYTHING in America. Not enough this or too much of that, but let me just say that I would rather be here in America, than to be in any other country right now! I am not in favor of war but I do honor and respect those who choose to serve our country because they are doing their duty to protect OUR country! This is THE LAND OF THE FREE AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE!!!

Words Of Wisdom About... Creative Writing!

I started a weekly post titled "Words Of Wisdom About...". Each Tuesday I publish a post written by a guest blogger who will talk about a topic of my choosing. Today's post is my sixth installment of these guest posts. Please enjoy as Ms Marvalus, a friend of mine and a sister by faith discusses what inspires her to write...

Writing Is My Passion!!!
I am a lover of words; I love watching them come together to form a story, or poem. I think that is probably why I love music so much; it not only is the beats that can affect my heart and soul, but it is always the words that tie me to an artist. I love a poet, someone who is able to display their emotions through the power of thought-provoking and meaningful lyrics.
I have always been a writer. It has taken me a long time to stand in that spot and claim it, but looking back, I now know that this is what has always been in my heart to do. I remember the stories that I used to create during my after school conversations with my best girlfriend. I had us in Paris and London, travelling with Duran Duran and New Edition (as their girlfriends and wives, not groupies), and the adventures we would go on. It was like tuning into a daily soap opera. Looking back on those times now brings a smile to my face, but also makes me realize the beginning of this journey that I’ve been on.
Since then, I have written many, many short stories, poems, and have even begun to write a novel that will one day be published (gotta keep positive!). It is fulfilling a need within me that I write; I can no longer contain it. I keep a notebook by my bed, because there are times when I wake in the middle of the night to the characters inside me speaking, wanting to be let out. Where does this come from? I believe that is the opening of the doors and once you allow your mind and spirit to flow freely, it welcomes the chance to create. It is about having an open mind, I think…being able to look at the world from all sides, not just one-dimensionally.
But it isn’t always as easy as it sounds. Writing is work, believe it or not. It requires unmitigated focus and commitment. It also requires organization and attention to detail. Thankfully, I have spent most of my life in Corporate America in a field that allowed me to enhance these skills. Using what I have learned has only enhanced what I consider a God given gift. I’ve read articles that say anyone can write a book; of course they can. But it goes beyond that…putting words on paper is all fine and good, but how about doing what your heart wants you to do?
True writers write because it is their passion. They write because they have to, not to get rich or famous. There are many writers who are never published, but some of their works are brilliant. Passion is what drives me; writing gives me a voice to share with the world. I am not looking for acclaim, or fame, or wealth. I write to satisfy a calling. And I would have it no other way.

I am a trainer and instructional designer by trade, and writer by nature. I am originally from Kansas City, Missouri and am the mother of a 12-year-old son who is the light of my world. I have been a blogger since 2006, and am the owner of two blogs, The Marvalus View and Live Marvalously!

Family Updates!!

Hello blogging friends and visitors!!

We (My Family and I) have had a very full week. There have been birthdays, graduations, and more.

So let me update you…

On Wednesday 6/25/08 we got our packing trailer delivered for our migration to the mid-western region. So we spent all day packing this trailer. About 9:30pm we washed up and changed clothes so that we could go out to dinner and celebrate my first born child’s birthday! She turned 23 years old!! We took her Delmonico’s (simply fabulous steaks!!) and gave her some time to relax and unwind from her long day of packing! Besides the excellent steaks my daughter got a song and a free birthday canoli!

We spent all of Thursday packing also but finally got it done. We paid for certain amount of footage in the 28’ trailer but ended up using the ENTIRE trailer! Yes we used the whole 28 feet! So the company came and picked up the trailer on Friday morning and we stuck with the clean up of a partially empty house. Some things did not make the cut, or just plain could not fit on the truck so it went out for the trash man. We had crowds of people going through our garbage for 2 days, taking stuff!

So we spent some days in a house with no furniture and no stuff…Yea that was fun! [NOT!!!]

On Saturday my niece graduated from high school! WooHoo! It was originally supposed to be two nieces but my younger niece was three credits short and did not graduate. She was upset, but not totally heartbroken since she is a year ahead anyway. So she will only have to do 3 classes in Texas. So went to graduation and celebrated this milestone in my niece’s life.

On Saturday after the graduation we spent the remainder of the day cleaning up and getting rid of the rest of the stuff in the house.

First thing Sunday morning we packed up the van (inside and out!) so that we could hit the road! We pulled out of Rochester about 7am on Sunday morning. I must admit I am excited and ready to move on. The only thing that saddens me is that one of my 5 children will not be making the trip. Yep, after months of planning and preparation my middle daughter [19 years old] decided that she will stay here with her father. The decision upsets me but I also realize that she is at an age where she is exerting her “adulthood”. I have every confidence that she will eventually join us, so in the mean time I keep praying for her. I pray that God’s will is manifested in her life! She did come to the house to see us off, say good bye and take some pictures before we pulled out. It was sad but nice…

We drove through beautiful weather until we hit Ohio... and then not so beautiful weather. We were smacked with A LOT of rain in parts of Ohio. And speaking of Ohio all the kids agree that they do not like that state! Every time they went to sleep and woke up and asked where we were, we were still in Ohio! That had to be the longest leg of the trip!

Luckily we had “Pat” (that is what we named her) the GPS navigational system that my mom got as a gift before we left.

So we are now at a hotel in Nashville, Tennessee and will be here until Tuesday and then we will take the last leg of our trip to Texas!! I have a bunch of pictures of a large group of hot, tired looking people! I will post some of them periodically and probably do a slide show, but I will save some of those pictures for BLACKMAIL PURPOSES ONLY!!!!

Oh yea, and my house is on the market ready to be sold. Well, people you are duly updated!!

“Alopecia Areata (al-oh-PEE-shah air-ee-AH-tah) is a highly unpredictable, autoimmune skin disease resulting in the loss of hair on the scalp and elsewhere on the body.” - The National Alopecia Areata Foundation

When I look in the mirror, I notice a mature woman who is showing her age. I am not thrilled by what I see, but have accepted the tradeoff -- the beauty of my youth for wisdom gained through experience and life lessons.

As a woman approaching 44, health issues have multiplied along with the typical body changes. Nevertheless, the silver lining of the journey was the birth of my precious promise. She was a fervent prayer delivered days before the big 40. Her arrival turned my world upside down and inside out. She took hold of my heart that early morning on Labor Day in 2004, and has never let go.

Pregnancy can be beneficial for a woman besides the obvious. With vitamins, nutrition, and the bodies own means to provide for carrying a child hair can became full and thick.

I remember being impressed at its growth and healthy condition. No one would ever expect what was to come though. Not even me. My hair started to fall out as predicted because of post pregnancy. However, with the bothersome combination of Alopecia and breastfeeding, my hair follicles would continue to be attacked by my own immune system.

Matthew 10:30 “…the very hairs of your head [no matter how many or few] are all numbered.”

Blessed with thick brown wavy locks since childhood Alopecia was never noticeable. It was not unusual for me to part my hair or drop my neck to expose smooth bare skin on multiple bald spots. Dare I say, to the point of boasting. Years of on-going treatment with a dermatologist for cortisone injections on the scalp proved to be successful, though only for months at a time.

I noticed the first bald spot after puberty at approximately age twelve, and the disease has progressed to Alopecia Areata Multilocularis (hair loss occurring on many parts of the epidermis).

On Mother’s Day 2005, I did more than treat myself to a manicure and pedicure. In a private room at a high-end spa, I was sporting a blond filament wig worth hundreds of dollars and excited about facing the world again. The possibilities of gaining some likeness to my former self seemed within reach.

I choose hair whether it grows naturally or if I put on. Hair on the head frames my face, it compliments my blue eyes, and color choice with wispy strands accentuates my full lips. Nevertheless, Alopecians opt for other alternatives to include hair wraps, caps with hair, or perhaps the ultimate liberation -- going bald. It is a personal preference, and each requires a level of acceptance of the disease and current stage. Yes, Alopecia is not the same for everyone and changes its habits without warning. This mystery disease has no known cause, but some contribute it to genetics or stress. Treatments vary and differ drastically.

Three years later, I am wearing a sixth wig. My choices were of different lengths and color, but all made me feel like the total woman. The reality of going natural was once a consideration, but short sparse hair reveals hard facial lines and the signs of droopy eyelids. Yet, when I show off in a wig, old age seems to diminish, and the evidence of fabricated youth brings a moment of victory when strangers compliment my hairstyle.

Once upon a time, I would only say thank you, but now I feel an obligation to share my secret. This is my moment of liberation and declaration of acceptance.

I believe strongly that all things work together for good (Romans 8:28), and the gift of Alopecia is not excluded from all. All means all!

Every minus can be turned into a plus if we take the time to look closer and note the obvious blessings.

Darfur: Nationwide Day Of Action

I usually only do one post on Friday and that is my Old School Friday (I LOVE my music!!!), but earlier in the week I visited one of my favorite blogs "Electronic Village" and found out that there would be a collective blogging effort on Friday June 20th for Darfur.
You may remember that I participated in another Darfur blogging effort Here and a Humanitarian effort Here. So blogging for a cause is not new to this blog. There is a faction of people that NO ONE is working for, No One is trying to help ensure THEIR FREEDOMS! So if not us than WHO will speak out?? If not now than WHEN will we speak out??

Words Of Wisdom About... Fatherhood

I started a weekly post titled "Words Of Wisdom About...". Each Tuesday I publish a post written by a guest blogger who will talk about a topic of my choosing. Today's post is my fourth installment of these guest posts. Please enjoy as Dr. Torrence Stephens talks about Fatherhood & Father's Day! Enjoy!

I will be the first one to admit that being a parent, a father is on the job training. I have from this point of view, had two jobs, one with 16 years experience (number one son) and the other with 3 years experience (number one daughter). But as life, I live and learn. What I have noticed is that there seems to be no difference how I deal with them, the commonality is that I would give my life from them, love the way they call me poppa, and how no matter what, regardless of what they may have done, no anger could abrogate my desire to put food on their plate and serve it to them at the table.

I do not know how any parent, especially a man, could live day to day without having any interaction with their kids, maybe that's why I don't really celebrate father's day because for me it is each day, each hour and each second I am with them or not with them. For when they are not around me, my actions and my mind make me focus such that it is all about them.

For me, it is hard to say why I am as close to my children as I am. I do not know if it was because I was raised without a father or if it is because I have exceptional home training – something that is lacking in the world today if anyone asked me. I also feel that a son can only learn to be a man from his father, although I admit women can raise a son by themselves, but may eventually end up raising lousy husbands for their daughters. I also believe that it is essential for a girl to see and have a man as a father in her life in the developmental stages so that she will know what men do and what is to be expected of a man. Too many women I meet have not had such and end up thinking their worth only lives within their looks or sex. Folk here don't get down like that and pray and hope that my little princess, via seeing and interacting with my son and I will know what men are, what they do and what defines them as such – hard work, kindness, integrity and respect.

So on this father's day, father's I am talking to you. Don't do what you don't desire for your children. See for me, it is an honor to have started my new venture, my store and having both of my seeds working it with me. I mean is it really fathers day, or family day? I would answer both and that if I had my way, it would be father's minute, because it is each minute that counts the most according to folk here, that you have the ability to talk, listen and hold your children in your embrace.

He received a master's degree in Educational Psychology and Measurement from Atlanta University and a Ph.D. in Counseling from Clark Atlanta University. Help Save Serena...

Serena is a little 3 year old girl who’s bravely fighting a rare form of cancer called neuroblastoma. She’s been undergoing chemotherapy but the only hope of defeating the cancer lies in the hands of specialists and equipment found in the U.S. She needs our help to raise money for her treatment.

First let me give Honor to my biological father who is no longer with us.
Samuel Thomas Spencer 1947-2001. I Love You Dad and wish you were here... Rest In Peace.

Secondly, I want to give Honor to God, my spiritual Father, Maker of the heavens and the Earth, without whom nothing is possible. Thank you Father for all that I am and all that I have. I thank you for your protection, and your direction and for all of the many blessings you have bestowed upon me!

Thirdly, and the true inspiration behind this Father's Day post. To my son, who is now a Father. I love you son and honor what you have done, are doing, and will do in your life. I thank God for you. Without the benefit of a positive male role model in your life you have grown into a promising, inspiring, strong, Man that I am so proud of. Your decision to serve the armed forces of this country is commendable and honorable and I love you for it.
I love you for the way you treat your wife and for the way you treat your daughter. I love you for the way you protect your sisters and for the brotherly love, and kinship you share with your younger brother. I love you for the way you have grown and matured, and for your positive influence on others. I love you because you are the manifestation of 1 of my 5 most cherished blessing from God. But mostly I love you because you are YOU!

It is...FRIDAY!! Which is my favorite day of the week because I get to post my "Old School Friday" Picks!
